RISE GUYS

Reading Is Success Everyday at Hayes Elementary School.  Thanks to approximately 50 KMHS students each year, better known as The "RISE GUYS",  students at our school are succeeding in accademics like never before.  These high school students are going into classrooms and reading with kids, writing with kids, making books with kids, and working alongside the teachers in whatever capacity that teacher might need.

These KMHS mentors are hailed as heroes at Hayes not only by the kids with whom they work but also the teachers they work with.  We could place twice as many students as we receive each year as they are the hottest commodity we distribute each semester.  The high schoolers undergo a lengthy evaluation process from the RISE faculty and must meet certain criteria to be admitted into the program.

KMHS Character Ed Mentoring

Under the leadership of Assistant Principal William Richardson, over 100 KMHS students come to Hayes Elementary the first Tuesday of every month to teach lessons in Character Education.  Three busloads of high school students enter the hallways of Hayes at 10:00 in the morning with lessons in hand to provide instruction in honesty, committment, dedication, trustworthiness, compassion, persistence and many other critical character ed components.

This is just one of the many ways that the Mustangs of Kennesaw Mountain help to mold the children of  Hayes.  They have also provided leadership in various other projects throughout the year such as National "MIXITUP"  for Lunch Day - a multi-cultural event,  RISE - Reading is Success Everyday,  Shop With a Mustang,  Spanish translation projects, and in April, they will lead our students in a Testing Pep Rally for the upcoming CRCT  .

The students and faculty of  Hayes depend on these KMHS students to role-model leadership qualities for our young children to see.  The children look up to them and very much look forward to their monthly visits.  Often times the mentors will bring treats along with their special lesson plans written individually for each separate grade level.

Many of the High School students request to return to one of their former teachers' classrooms to provide character ed lessons.  What an uplifting experience it is for our teachers to host one of their former students in this capacity.  As my blog title suggests,  "From Hurricanes to Mustangs",  this is our goal - and we appreciate all of the effort, time and talent our KMHS mentors put into making this dream a reality.
